Department of Radiation Oncology at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre
The Department of Radiation Oncology at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre comes with a long rich history. Involved in exemplary work for the last 47 years, the department is recognized as a pioneer in radiotherapy across the globe.
Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre was the 1st private multidisciplinary hospital in India to have a radiotherapy facility. The facility was later upgraded in 1997 with the installation of a Digital High Energy Linear Accelerator (Siemens Primus) with 3-D treatment and Stereotactic Radiotherapy and Brachytherapy.
In 2008, the department also acquired a second Linear Accelerator (Siemens ONCOR Expression) with sophisticated Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) and Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT), which allowed very precise radiation dose delivery to the tumour area while protecting nearby normal/critical organs at the same time.
The department has also recently established the latest linear accelerator, the Truebeam system version 2.7, to deliver precise dosage quickly and treat cancer anywhere in the body. This technology comes with many special features and tools for advanced image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) and capabilities like Respiration-synchronised MV/kV radiographs, 4D CBCT, Iterative CBCT, Triggered Imaging and more.
The Department of Radiation Oncology is known for offering a variety of treatment techniques, from simple conventional radiotherapy to RapidArc and more, for treating a broad range of cancers. The department has also mastered newer techniques like Frameless Cranial Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Radiotherapy and Body Stereotactic Radiotherapy for cancers of the lung, liver, pancreas, etc.
Gated deep inspiration radiotherapy is also available at the centre, especially for left breast cancer patients to reduce the dose to the heart and substructures, including the coronaries. Gated treatments in moving targets like patients of breast cancer and lung cancer help in providing greater results and precise treatment.
With modern technology and expert surgeons and oncologists, the department has greatly improved control rates and simultaneously minimised possible adverse effects in complex cancer cases in the country.
The Department of Radiation Oncology at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre is dedicated to providing exceptional radiation therapy services to patients while working collaboratively with other medical specialists and healthcare professionals. It works closely with patients to develop individualised treatment plans that take into account their unique medical histories, cancer type, stage, and other important factors.
In addition to providing radiation therapy, the Department of Radiation Oncology is also actively involved in clinical research and education. The department conducts regular clinical trials to test new radiation therapy techniques and technologies and offers educational programs for the staff and trainees to ensure that they are up-to-date on the latest developments in radiation oncology.

Key Technologies
- The Department of Radiation Oncology uses the most advanced technology and equipment to treat all types of cancer using radiotherapy. The latest technology used in the department is one of its biggest strengths, making it one of the most premium departments in the country.
- The department uses state-of-the-art techniques such as Volumetric Arc Radiotherapy (VMAT) / RapidArc techniques in addition to IMRT and IGRT. Facilities like CT scans and PET-CT scans are available in-house
- The department has also procured a new LINAC (linear accelerator) , TRUEBEAM with ECLIPSE Treatment Planning station. The new TRUEBEAM is equipped with multiple photon and Electron energies along with KV Cone Beam CT scan for image verification with 6D Couch. It is also equipped with FFF for performing complex radiation treatment plans like - Sterotactic Radiosurgeries and Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR)
- The department is using the Precise Treatment System from Elekta which has been designed specifically to deliver the best treatment and personalised cancer care.
- Single, double and multiple image acquisition modes are also available in the department with movie loop playback, image display and manipulation and on- and off-line workflows with MOSAIQ image management. MOSAIQ is a comprehensive image-enabled electronic medical record for radiation oncology,
- The department also features a rotational IMRT technique known as VMAT. It is an advanced radiation therapy technique that delivers high radiation doses precisely to the tumour target while reducing the dose to the surrounding tissues and organs. Using single or multiple radiation beams that sweep in uninterrupted arcs around the patient enables the treatment time to be reduced dramatically. This thereby reduces on-couch motion of patients and significantly reduces errors in delivery of radiation.
