The Department of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery (CVTS) at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre is one of the pioneering cardiac surgery units in a private hospital in Mumbai. It is dedicated to providing exceptional care to patients with complex cardiac and thoracic conditions.

The team of highly-experienced surgeons, nurses, and support staff at the department is committed to delivering the highest level of surgical expertise and patient-centred care.

The Department of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery (CVTS) follows a multidisciplinary approach. The doctors at the department work closely with other specialists, including cardiologists, pulmonologists and anaesthesiologists, to ensure that our patients receive “co-ordinated” care.

At the Department of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery, we are committed to advancing the field of cardiac and thoracic surgery through ongoing research and education. Our surgeons are actively involved in clinical trials and research studies and regularly participate in medical conferences and training programs to stay up-to-date with the latest techniques and technologies.

The Department of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery has to its credit several enviable firsts, such as:

  • 1st triple coronary bypass surgery in Mumbai
  • 1st open-heart surgery in a one-month-old newborn baby
  • 1st minimally invasive open-heart surgery

The Department of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre is also the pioneer in starting Beating Heart Coronary Bypass Operation, which was 1st performed in 1995.

Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre is also one of the few hospitals in Mumbai with an active heart transplantation program for patients with end-stage heart failure. When medications and even conventional surgical treatment prove to be ineffective, Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre provides the patients with an option of Assist Devices, like Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD), at the Heart Failure Clinic of the hospital.

The Department of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre is also one of the leading referral centres for patients across Maharashtra and western India for complicated coronary artery surgery patients, patients with poor heart function and reoperative coronary artery bypass surgery patients.

Owing to the state-of-the-art infrastructure, technology and clinical expertise, thousands of national as well as international patients visit Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre every year for undergoing heart surgeries for complex heart problems.

The high-quality, evidence-based approach followed by the department sets it apart from the rest of the centres. Due to vast experience in all types of complicated cardiothoracic procedures, the success rate and clinical outcomes of the Department of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre are comparable to international standards.

Center of Excellence for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery

Minimally-invasive cardiac surgery technique with thoracoscopic assistance was 1st developed in India at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre in 1995. These minimally-invasive cardiac procedures help speed the recovery process and lower the chance of complications compared to traditional cardiac surgery methods.

Currently, valve repair/replacements, coronary artery bypass surgeries, and paediatric cardiac surgeries for the closure of congenital cardiac defects are performed regularly at the department through this technique.

Centre of Excellence for Valve Repair and Repeat (Redo) Open-Heart Surgery

Repair of leaking heart valves improves heart function and quality of life as compared to replacement with a prosthesis. Under the leadership of Dr Suresh Joshi, Director of Cardiac Surgery, a large number of patients undergo valve repairs for complex mitral valve regurgitation pathologies every year.

These surgeries are challenging and involve high risk. They require an integrated approach with a team of cardiac surgeons, anaesthetists and intensivists. The Department of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery specialises in managing such high-risk complex cases with excellent outcomes.
