The Department of Critical Care Medicine at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre receives patients from the emergency department, wards and operation theatre regularly. The ICUs are well-equipped to manage sick patients who require ventilator support, inotropic support, dialysis, broad-spectrum antibiotics and invasive monitoring. 

The department offers all types of ICU & Critical Care Unit (CCU) services by efficient and skilled physicians around the clock. The ICU team at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre consists of highly qualified consultant intensivists available 24x7. They are well-trained and experienced in handling all types of emergencies and performing intricate invasive and non-invasive emergency procedures at the bedside. The Department of Critical Care Medicine features a state-of-the-art 48-bed ICU and 5 ICU chambers, all dedicated to providing the highest level of quality care to different kinds of patients. The department also has separate ICUs for cardiac patients, neuro patients, oncology patients and orthopaedic surgery patients to avoid any chances of infection. 

The technological advances in evaluations and management of critically ill patients in all leading hospitals have changed in unimaginable ways. However, the principles of evaluation and management have not changed. The bedside physical examination still remains the cornerstone of clinical judgement. It is much faster, often more accurate and time-saving in emergencies. It is, therefore, the essence of Critical Care Medicine, where immediate interventions can often make the difference between life and death. 

At Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre, all the latest equipment, monitoring devices, intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) machines, temporary pacemakers, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), etc., are readily available for patient care. Advanced haemodynamic monitoring, ventilation, CRRT, SLED, ECMO, imaging, IABP, invasive procedures, bronchoscopy and many more advanced technologies and procedures are available 24X7 in the ICU with dedicated intensivist and expert consultation. The qualified & skilled intensivists in the department work day-night to run the ICUs efficiently with the single motto of patient care. The department also has a dedicated Code Blue team that manages emergency cases in the hospital with a response time of approximately 2 to 4 minutes.

One of the main features of the Department of Critical Care Medicine is the ECMO team which is operational 24X7. Very few hospitals in Mumbai offer this kind of facility. 

The Department of Critical Care Medicine also organises regular CPR training programs for all doctors and nurses. The CPR training takes place in the entire hospital and helps expedite the duty of the Code Blue team, thereby leading to better patient services. Every two months, the department also conducts an audit of the entire Code Blue team.

The ICUs have a dedicated Infection Control Programme, Bed Sore Management Protocol, End of Life Care, Brain Death Certification Policy and Organ Donation Programme to ensure patient safety and comfort. 

The Department of Critical Care at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre is also well known for conducting academic activities. Two students for the FNB fellowship, four post-MD students for ISCCM and two students for post-MBBS programmes are selected every year by the department.  

Every year, the department also organises a Critical Care Conference, to which national and international faculties are invited, as well as a two-day CME attended by doctors from across the city and nearby states.
