Department of Gastrointestinal (GI) and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre
The Gastrointestinal (GI) and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery Service was started in 1999 in Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre with the establishment of a unit comprising consultants with special interests and expertise in HPB and GI surgery. In 2006, this unit became a separate department and was recognised for the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) Surgical Gastroenterology Programme of the National Board of Examinations (NBE).
The department has now evolved into a well-known centre for treating patients with complex diseases of the digestive system, liver, pancreas, and biliary tract.
The Department of Gastrointestinal (GI) and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery has consultants who have specialised in hepatobiliary surgery, liver transplantation, laparoscopic surgery, upper GI surgery, bariatric surgery and colorectal surgery. This surgical work is backed by expertise in gastroenterology, interventional radiology and endoscopy. HPB and GI surgeons perform complex hepatobiliary procedures, which include resections of the liver for tumours, surgery for obstructive jaundice, procedures for portal hypertension and surgical intervention for pancreatitis. With support from hepatology, endoscopy and interventional radiology services, a combined team approach is offered for the management of liver tumours.
The Department of Gastrointestinal (GI) and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery is also well known in the country for its liver transplant surgeries. In 1998, Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre performed the 1st successful living-related liver transplant in the country and the 1st ever liver transplant in Western India. Since then, the department has performed 42 transplants, which is the largest number in all of Western India.
Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre has also been among the most experienced centres for treating acute pancreatitis in India since the 1980s.
A wide variety of advanced laparoscopic procedures are also performed regularly in the department, including fundoplication, cardiomyotomy, splenectomy, colorectal resections and bariatric procedures.
The department is also known for performing a variety of complex HPB and GI surgeries, including both open and laparoscopic procedures. The surgeons of Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre were among those who helped pioneer laparoscopic or minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery. Advanced laparoscopic surgery for oesophageal diseases such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and achalasia, diseases that require upper GI surgery, bariatric surgery and colorectal resections are all performed by our expert surgeons.
The Department of Gastrointestinal (GI) and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery also offers treatment to high-risk patients, including those who are turned down for surgery by other institutions. Patients, therefore, frequently seek second opinions from surgeons at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre.
In addition to the expert surgeons, the Department of Gastrointestinal (GI) and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery is also well-equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including advanced diagnostic and surgical technologies to ensure that patients receive the most advanced treatments.
At the heart of the department's approach is a commitment to patient-centred care. The Department of Gastrointestinal (GI) and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery strongly believes in treating each patient with compassion, respect, and empathy and ensuring that they are fully informed and involved in all aspects of their care.
