Department of Nephrology & Kidney Transplantation at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre

The Department of Nephrology & Kidney Transplantation at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre is amongst the oldest nephrology services in private care setup in Western India. It has been the best nephrology hospital in Mumbai and all of Western India for decades, currently performing more than 120 kidney transplants per year.

The department is dedicated to providing comprehensive and compassionate care for patients with kidney-related conditions. It consists of a team of the best nephrologists in Mumbai, along with a team of surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who work together to diagnose, treat, and manage a wide range of kidney diseases and disorders.

The primary focus of the Department of Nephrology & Kidney Transplantation is on the prevention, diagnosis, and management of kidney diseases such as chronic kidney disease, glomerulonephritis, polycystic kidney disease, nephrotic syndrome, and other conditions affecting the kidney.

Involved in patient care through clinical nephrology, haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, critical care nephrology and kidney transplant, it provides both indoor and outpatient care for patients with kidney disease. Thousands of haemodialysis sessions are performed every month at the department, including outpatient haemodialysis, indoor haemodialysis, and SLED and CRRT modalities for dialysis in ICU patients. Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD and APD) services are also available in the department.

Other specialised services offered by the Department of Nephrology & Kidney Transplantation include tunnelled cuffed haemodialysis catheter (Permcath) and temporary dialysis catheter insertion, and percutaneous biopsy of the native kidney and kidney allograft.

The department has facilities to conduct all three tests—light microscopy, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy examination on the biopsy sample. The Department of Nephrology & Kidney Transplantation at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre was the 1st centre to start electron microscopy examinations in a private setup.

The Kidney Transplant Program at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre began in 1974, and more than 3000 kidney transplants have been performed to date. The department undertakes both living donor and deceased (cadaver) donor kidney transplants.

Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre has also been a pioneer in ABO incompatible kidney transplantation in India and has performed more than a quarter of the current annual transplants across the blood groups. The Kidney Transplant Program at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre also provides kidney paired exchange (swap) transplants, transplantation in children, patients with abnormal bladder, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, and robotic and laparoscopic donor nephrectomy surgeries to all the patients in need.

The Department of Nephrology & Kidney Transplantation at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre believes in providing patient-centred care far beyond the operation. The doctors and healthcare team at the department ensure long-term follow-up of transplant patients to improve their quality of life.

Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre offers excellent results, comparable with international standards, at an affordable price. The department also runs an accredited super speciality training program—Doctorate of National Board (DrNB) in Nephrology and is actively involved in research on kidney diseases and transplantation, with numerous national and international publications to its credit.

Advanced Technological Treatments at the Department of Nephrology & Kidney Transplantation

The department is known for performing ABO incompatible (across the blood group) kidney transplantation. The results of ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation at the centre are as good as blood group-compatible kidney transplantation.

The department has done more than 300 such transplants so far using plasmapheresis procedures. The department also uses A or B blood group columns in patients with high levels of anti-blood group antibodies.

The Department of Nephrology & Kidney Transplantation also performs living donor kidney transplantation among high-risk patients, such as elderly recipients, paediatric recipients, donors above 70 years of age, HIV-positive recipients and positive cross-match patients, after desensitisation therapy.

The department also performs both adult as well as paediatric deceased donor kidney transplants and kidney paired exchange (swap transplant) for blood group incompatible or HLA-antibody incompatible pairs.

The Department of Nephrology & Kidney Transplantation is actively involved in the care of critically ill patients. It regularly performs ICU dialysis (SLED) or continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) for such patients. The team is also able to manage CRRT intraoperatively, CRRT with an ECMO circuit and CRRT with citrate anticoagulation.

The experienced surgeons and nephrologists at the department are also well-versed in the use of immunoadsorption columns for the management of patients with cytokine storm, sepsis and septic shock
