Introduction:

Dr Nilesh Doctor, after completing training at KEM Hospital in Mumbai in General Surgery, Dr Nilesh obtained specialist training at the prestigious Royal Free Hospital in London in the field of Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic, Colorectal Surgery and Liver Transplantation for a period of 4 years.

He returned to Mumbai and joined Jaslok Hospital and Research Center in 1997. After joining, he helped set up the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology. This center made rapid strides in the field and soon became a major center of excellence in India, providing services hitherto unavailable in this part of the world. He was part of the team that performed the first successful Living Donor Liver transplant in India. Soon, complex GI surgical services in the field of Pancreatic surgery, Advanced Laparoscopic surgery, HPB Oncology, Liver surgery, Cadaver Liver transplants, Gastrointestinal Oncology and Biliary surgery were available in the Department.

He pioneered the era of training young surgeons in this specialty at a Private hospital, previously unavailable in the country. Initially, it was started with a One-year training program in surgery, and this blossomed into a well-recognized DNB program for 3 years in Surgical Gastroenterology.
