Department of Radiation Oncology
The Department of Radiation Oncology at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre in Mumbai provides radiation therapy for cancer. The department works with other medical specialists and healthcare professionals. Treatment plans are individualised according to the patient’s medical history, cancer type, stage and other factors.
Equipment and Technologies
The radiotherapy facility was upgraded in 1997 with a Digital High Energy Linear Accelerator (Siemens Primus) with 3-D treatment, stereotactic radiotherapy and brachytherapy.
In 2008, the department added a second linear accelerator (Siemens ONCOR Expression) with Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) and Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT). These techniques direct radiation dose to the tumour area while limiting dose to nearby normal organs.
TrueBeam Linear Accelerator
The department has a TrueBeam linear accelerator (version 2.7) with the Eclipse treatment planning station. It has multiple photon and electron energies, kV cone beam CT for image verification, a 6D couch and FFF mode, which is used for stereotactic radiosurgery and Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR) plans.
For image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), it includes respiration-synchronised MV/kV radiographs, 4D CBCT, Iterative CBCT and triggered imaging. The system supports VMAT (Volumetric Arc Radiotherapy/RapidArc), IMRT and IGRT.
Imaging, Planning and Records
CT and PET-CT scans are available in-house. The department uses the Elekta Precise Treatment System. Single, double and multiple image acquisition modes are available, with movie loop playback, image display and manipulation, and on-line and off-line workflows with MOSAIQ image management. MOSAIQ is an image-enabled electronic medical record for radiation oncology.
Volumetric Arc Radiotherapy (VMAT)
VMAT is a rotational form of IMRT. Single or multiple radiation beams move in continuous arcs around the patient to deliver radiation dose to the tumour while limiting dose to surrounding tissues and organs. Delivery in arcs can shorten treatment time and the time a patient spends on the treatment couch.
