Department of Cardiology at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre, Mumbai

Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre was established in 1973. The Department of Cardiology provides preventive, diagnostic, paediatric and adult cardiac services in Mumbai.

Cardiac Procedures and Techniques

The department provides 2D echocardiography, electrophysiology study (EPS), drug-eluting stent implantation and use of the Impella left ventricular assist device.

Complex coronary angioplasty is performed using techniques such as rotablation, intravascular ultrasound, intravascular lithotripsy and optical coherence tomography, along with ECMO, IABP and IFR / FFR studies.

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) is performed, including valve-in-valve and native valve replacement and implantation.

Device closures in adults and paediatrics, ASD, VSD, PDA and coarctation stenting are also performed in the department.

Project PAMI: Primary Angioplasty in Acute Myocardial Infarction

Project PAMI is designed for patients who have had major heart attacks and need timely medical intervention.

The cardiac team is available round-the-clock. It includes a senior and a junior cardiologist, a cardiac anaesthetist, a technician and a nurse, in addition to the emergency services staff.

When a patient with a major heart attack is brought to the hospital, the PAMI code is activated and the patient is transferred to the catheterisation lab. The totally occluded artery is then opened with a stent.

Arrhythmia

Arrhythmia is a condition in which the heart beats too fast or too slow. The department diagnoses it using 24-hour and 48-hour Holter monitoring, loop recording, tilt-table testing and EPS.

Patients with slow heartbeats may require pacemakers. Electro cardiologists in the department implant single-chamber or dual-chamber pacemakers and perform cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT-P), in which a pacemaker is implanted to boost the heart’s pumping function and treat heart failure. In some situations, CRT-D or a combination device is used to treat heart failure and ventricular arrhythmias.

For a very fast heartbeat, treatment options include defibrillation and cardioversion, radiofrequency ablation, and implantation of an automated implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD).

Heart Failure and Cardiac Rehabilitation

The hospital runs heart failure clinics where patients are evaluated by cardiologists. Care includes medical management and rehabilitation with a physiotherapist and a psychiatrist.

Treatment options discussed with patients include revascularization by angioplasty or heart surgery, cardiac resynchronisation therapy, an intra-aortic balloon pump and left ventricular assist devices.

The hospital has a heart transplant unit with cardiothoracic surgeons trained in cardiac transplantation.

Patients and their families receive advice and training from the team on coping with the condition.

Valvular Heart Disease and Cardiomyopathy

The department evaluates conditions such as rheumatic, mitral and aortic valve disease, nonrheumatic valvular regurgitation or stenosis, dilated cardiomyopathy and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. A long-term treatment plan is provided.

Patients with mitral valve stenosis are treated with balloon mitral valvuloplasty, in which the valve is opened non-surgically using a balloon. Valve replacement surgeries are performed by cardiothoracic surgeons.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is performed for patients with aortic stenosis, using access through the groin arteries.

Paediatric Cardiology

The department uses echocardiography equipment to evaluate heart disease in children. It treats defects present from birth, such as a hole in the heart and narrowing of valves.

Treatment is provided for congenital heart defects including atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect and patent ductus arteriosus device closure.

FAQ’s

Q1. What is Project PAMI?

Project PAMI (Primary Angioplasty in Acute Myocardial Infarction) is designed for patients who have had major heart attacks and need timely medical intervention. When such a patient is brought to the hospital, the PAMI code is activated and the patient is transferred to the catheterisation lab, where the totally occluded artery is opened with a stent.

Q2. Which tests are used to diagnose arrhythmia?

The department uses 24-hour and 48-hour Holter monitoring, loop recording, tilt-table testing and EPS.

Q3. Does the Department of Cardiology treat children?

Yes. The department provides paediatric cardiology, including treatment of atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect and patent ductus arteriosus device closure.

Q4. Is the cardiac team available at all hours?

The cardiac team is available round-the-clock.
