CT coronary angiography

1. What is a CT Coronary?

A CT Coronary Angiogram (CTCA) is a specialized, non-invasive imaging test that uses advanced X-ray technology and a computer to create detailed 3D images of the heart and its blood vessels. Unlike traditional angiography, it does not require a catheter to be threaded through your arteries. Instead, a contrast dye is injected through a small IV line in your arm to make the coronary arteries visible to the CT scanner.

·         Common Names: Cardiac CT, CTCA, Non-invasive Coronary Angiogram, Heart CT Scan.

2. Common Symptoms Requiring a CT Coronary

A doctor may order this scan to rule out blockages when symptoms are present but not yet considered an emergency:

·         Atypical Chest Pain: Discomfort that doesn't clearly indicate a heart attack but needs investigation.

·         Uncertain Stress Test Results: If a treadmill test was inconclusive or showed borderline issues.

·         Low to Intermediate Risk Factors: When a patient has a family history of heart disease and high cholesterol but no acute symptoms.

·         New-onset Heart Failure: To check if the cause of heart weakness is due to blocked arteries.

3. List of Associated Diseases

A CT Coronary is an excellent tool for identifying:

·         Coronary Artery Disease (CAD): Detecting plaque buildup (both hard calcium and "soft" fatty plaque).

·         Congenital Coronary Anomalies: Structural issues with the arteries present since birth.

·         Aneurysms: Bulges or weak spots in the heart's blood vessels.

·         Stent or Bypass Graft Patency: Checking if previously placed stents or bypasses are still open and functioning.

4. List of Screening Tests

Before the scan, a few steps are taken to ensure the procedure is safe and the images are clear:

·         Blood Test (Creatinine): To ensure your kidneys are healthy enough to filter out the contrast dye.

·         Heart Rate Check: The scan requires a slow, steady heart rate (usually below 65 BPM) for clear images.

·         ECG: Often done immediately before the scan to sync the CT machine with your heartbeat.

5. Am I Eligible for this Procedure?

You are a candidate for a CT Coronary if:

·         You have a low to intermediate risk of coronary artery disease.

·         You have normal kidney function.

·         You can hold your breath for about 10–15 seconds.

·         Note: You may not be eligible if you have a known severe allergy to iodine/contrast dye, are pregnant, or have a very irregular heart rate (like uncontrolled AFib) that makes imaging difficult.

6. Pre and Post Care

Pre-Procedure Care

·         Caffeine Restriction: Avoid coffee, tea, energy drinks, and chocolate for 12–24 hours, as caffeine raises your heart rate.

·         Fasting: Do not eat for 3–4 hours before the scan (water is usually okay).

·         Medication: If your heart rate is high, the doctor may give you a "Beta-blocker" tablet just before the scan to slow it down.

Post-Procedure Care

·         Hydration: Drink plenty of water (at least 1–2 liters) throughout the day to flush the contrast dye from your kidneys.

·         No Downtime: You can return to work and normal activities immediately.

·         Observation: If you were given a sedative or beta-blocker, you may be asked to wait for 30 minutes before leaving.

7. Days Required for Hospitalization

Zero. This is an outpatient procedure. The actual time inside the CT scanner is only about 10–20 minutes. Including preparation and the IV line setup, you will likely spend about 1 hour at the diagnostic center. No overnight stay is required.

8. Benefits of a CT Coronary

·         Non-Invasive: No catheters, no sedation, and no recovery time compared to traditional angiography.

·         Early Detection: It can see "soft plaque" (fatty deposits) that haven't yet caused a major blockage, allowing for early lifestyle changes.

·         High Negative Predictive Value: If the CT scan says your arteries are clear, there is a 99?rtainty that you do not have significant coronary disease.

·         Quick Results: Provides a detailed 3D "map" of your heart in a fraction of the time of other invasive tests.
