Dr. Amit Desai ompleted the Indian School Certificate (ISC) examination from the Cathedral and John Connon High School, Mumbai in 1969 after which he joined St. Xavier's College, Mumbai in 1970 and passed the 1st Year Science and Intermediate Science examination with distinction. He started his under-graduate medical studies at the G. S. Medical College, Mumbai from 1972. He received his M.B.B.S. degree in 1978 from Bombay University. He did his residency programme in the Department of Psychiatry at the K.E.M. Hospital, Mumbai from 1978-1980 during which time he passed the Diploma in Psychological Medicine (D.P.M.) examination and the Doctor of Medicine - M.D. (Psychological Medicine), both from Bombay University. He was ranked 1st in the D.P.M. examination and was awarded the Dr. J.C.Marfatia Gold Medal for passing the M.D. (Psychological Medicine) examination with the highest proficiency.
After obtaining these degrees, Dr. Desai worked as a Senior Research Officer in the Department of Psychiatry, K.E.M. Hospital under the mentor-ship of Dr. Dinshaw Doongaji from 1981-1989 when he was involved with clinical research and teaching. Along with his colleagues, he published articles in Indian and international medical journals. He also wrote and edited chapters on psychiatric topics in medical textbooks for the benefit of undergraduate medical students.
In addition to treating patients with medications, he was also involved with other treatment modalities like Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECTs), in-patient treatment for patients with severe psychiatric disorders, Behaviour Therapy and Counselling. He hold special interest in psychopharmacology and in treating schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, psychosomatic disorders and psycho-sexual disorders.
Dr. Amit joined Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre, Mumbai in 2000. He is still attending to patients there till date. In the hospital he runs out-patient clinics thrice weekly and is involved in consultation-liaison work with other medical consultants in the management of their patients' treatment and well-being. He is also a member of a team of neurosurgeons, neurologists, psychologists and psychiatrists to assess suitability of patients suffering from refractory neuropsychiatric disorders, mainly Major Depression and Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder for Functional Neurosurgery.
